When scared or stressed blennies will usually seek shelter in a cave or similar hide away; the aquarium should be set up in a way that gives the Blennies lots of hiding spots. Blennies are communal fish that are happiest and safest when kept in small schools; however, Blennies of a different species do not always get along, only one species of Blennies should be kept per aquarium. Blennies can be safely kept with damselfish, gobies, tetras, and goatfish. Habitat: Blennies require about two gallons of tank space for every one- inch of fish. Depending on the species of Blenny, they range from 2- 6 inches long, so one adult Blenny requires 4- 1. Blennies naturally live in tropical saltwater reef areas, so their aquarium should be set up to mimic their natural habitat as much as possible. The bottom of the aquarium should be covered in about 3- 4 inches of sea sand and should include some coral, hollow rocks or other things for the Blenny to hide in. The aquarium will also require a water filtration system, an internal water pump, water heater, thermometer and a hydrometer to check salt levels. The aquarium can also include some real or fake plants. The temperature of the water should be around 7. Fahrenheit and have a salinity of 1. The aquarium light should be on during the day and turned off at night. Appearance and Care: Blennies are attractive small fish that measure 2- 6 inches from nose to tail when full grown. Both male and female Blennies are around the same size. Blennies come in a variety of colors; the most common are dull yellow or green with black markings, bright blue with white or orange markings, bright yellow with black markings or highlights, or bright white with black and red highlights. Diet: Blennies are omnivores; they eat a mixture of commercial fish food and small crustaceans. Blennies do not have to be fed live food, but most enjoy it and it usually makes for a healthier fish. Most Blennies enjoy commercial fish food, shrimp, scallops, mussels, and sometimes small frozen guppies. Blennies tend to be slow eaters, so owners should make sure the other fish in the tank do not steal their food. Health: Blennies need a good amount of dedication to ensure their environment is sustained properly.
